The Road to Sedona: Part 1 - The Launch, Luxury Linens, and the Memphis Grit

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you finally turn the key in the ignition of a freshly prepped RV. It’s a mix of relief, adrenaline, and that slightly terrifying realization that you’ve left your "stationary" life behind for a while. Leaving Chattanooga wasn't just about putting miles between us and the Tennessee River; it was about launching a new chapter. If you’ve been following our journey at Dale's Angels Inc., you know we don’t do things halfway. We’re heading to Sedona, but before we hit the red rocks, we had to survive the "Launch."

The Deep Clean and the Luxury Upgrade

Preparing an RV for a cross-country haul is a bit like preparing for a space mission, only with more vacuuming and fewer freeze-dried peas. We spent the better part of the week in "un-winterizing" mode. For those who don't know, that involves a lot of flushing out pipes and making sure the rig hasn't decided to develop any new "personalities" over the colder months.

But the real focus was on the comfort factor. If we’re going to be living on the road, it has to feel like a sanctuary, not just a vehicle. We swapped out the standard-issue camper pads for new luxury mattresses. Let me tell you, if you are looking for a reason to finally buy coffee beans online and stay up all night, it shouldn't be because your mattress is lumpy. We went for high-thread-count linens and the kind of pillows that make you feel like you're sleeping on a cloud. When you're a luxury travel advisor like Felicia Baxter, you learn quickly that the difference between a "trip" and a "vacation" is often found in the quality of the linens.

Fueling the Launch: Small Batch Coffee Roasters

You can’t launch a rocket: or an RV: without the right fuel. For us, that means FB Roasters. There is something incredibly grounding about the ritual of a pour-over coffee while the morning sun hits the dashboard. We brought along a fresh supply of their Latin America Blend. As far as small batch coffee roasters go, FB Roasters hits that sweet spot of being bold enough to wake you up but smooth enough to enjoy while navigating interstate traffic.

If you’re a regular traveler, I cannot recommend a coffee subscription enough. Having that box of liquid gold waiting for you before you hit the road takes one more thing off the "to-do" list. It’s about more than just caffeine; it’s about maintaining a sense of home and quality, no matter where you park for the night.

The First Leg: Chattanooga to the Memphis / Marion KOA Journey

The drive across Tennessee is a beautiful, rolling stretch of green, but the goal was the "Bluff City." Our first major base of operations is the Memphis / Marion KOA Journey (ID 4142). Located just across the river in Marion, Arkansas, it’s the perfect spot to unhook and breathe. It’s close enough to the action of Memphis to be convenient, but quiet enough that you don't feel the hum of the city vibrating through your tires all night.

Somewhere after we left Chattanooga and settled into that steady interstate rhythm, we hit play on the first few chapters of The Fall of Terok Nor—book one of the Deep Space Nine Millennium trilogy—from the Far From Beale Street collection. It’s one of those stories that doesn’t ease you in. It drops you into the complicated, bruised history of Terok Nor and the long shadow of the Cardassian occupation—power, control, collaboration, survival, and what it costs people to endure when “normal” gets rewritten by whoever is holding the keys.

And honestly, it felt like the right soundtrack for rolling toward Memphis.

Memphis has that same layered, unpolished truth to it. Not in a sci-fi way, obviously—but in the way the city carries history in the open. You feel the grit in the streets, the music, the buildings that have been repurposed instead of erased, and the sense that a place can be both wounded and still wildly alive. Listening to Terok Nor’s past while we crossed Tennessee made Memphis feel even more like a living archive—messy, resilient, and impossible to flatten into a simple story.

Setting up camp at a KOA always feels like a homecoming. There’s a compassionate community of road-warriors there: people who understand why you chose a house on wheels over a hotel room. As we leveled the rig and hooked up the water, the excitement for the days ahead started to really settle in. We weren't just driving; we were experiencing.

Memphis Grit: Graceland and Beyond

You can’t go to Memphis and not pay your respects at Graceland. There’s a specific kind of grit and soul in the air there. It’s flashy, it’s iconic, and it’s deeply American. Walking through the Jungle Room, you can almost hear the echoes of a different era of travel: one where the journey was as loud and bold as the destination.

But after the glitz of the King’s mansion, we needed something a bit more grounded. We headed over to the Crosstown Concourse. If you haven't been, it’s a massive "vertical urban village" in a repurposed Sears building. It is a stunning example of urban renewal done right. Our destination? Farm Burger.

If you’re looking for a meal that stays true to the "taste great, less filling" mantra, this is it. They serve 100% grass-fed beef, and you can truly taste the difference. It’s the kind of meal that makes you feel fueled rather than weighed down. We sat there, surrounded by the industrial-chic architecture of the Concourse, and plotted out the next few days of our trek.

Arkansas Nights and the Southland Casino

After a day of grit and history, we decided to lean into the "witty and wild" side of the trip. Just a stone's throw from our campsite in Marion is the Southland Casino in West Memphis, Arkansas. Now, I’m not saying we’re high rollers, but there’s a certain thrill to the neon lights and the rhythmic chiming of the machines that rounds out a travel day perfectly.

The casino offers a complete shift in vibe from the quiet RV interior. It’s loud, it’s lively, and it’s a great place to people-watch while enjoying a drink. It’s also a reminder that travel is about the balance of extremes: from the quiet stillness of a sunrise coffee to the high-energy pulse of a casino floor.

Planning Your Own Great Escape

As we settle into the first few days of this "Road to Sedona" series, I’m reminded of how many people want to do this but don't know where to start. Planning a trip that involves both RV logistics and luxury experiences requires a delicate touch.

This is where Felicia Baxter comes in. As a Fora Travel Advisor, Felicia specializes in blending the ruggedness of the road with the comforts of high-end travel. Whether you need help finding the best "hidden gem" KOAs or you want to book a luxury stay in Sedona once the RV is parked, having a professional in your corner makes all the difference. She can help you navigate the complexities of modern travel while ensuring you don't miss out on the small-batch experiences that make a trip memorable.

What’s Next?

The "Launch" is officially over. The mattresses are tested (and they are glorious), the coffee is brewing, and the Memphis grit has left its mark on our souls. From here, we turn our sights further west. We’ll be navigating the I-40 grind, searching for the best roadside stops, and eventually making our way into the high desert magic of Arizona.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll talk about the transition from the Mississippi River to the wide-open plains of Texas. We’ve got some Cadillac Ranch dreams and a lot more miles to cover.
