When most people land at Harry Reid International, their internal compass automatically snaps North toward the neon glow of the Strip. They’re thinking about the Bellagio fountains, the high-stakes tables, and the endless buffet lines. But for those of us who prefer a bit of "Tactical Luxury" mixed with our desert dust, there is a different path. It’s what I like to call the "Vegas Right Turn."

Instead of following the herd toward the casinos of mid-strip, you hang a right. You head toward the quiet, the vastness, and the deep blue contrast of Lake Mead. This isn’t just a detour; it’s a lifestyle choice. Whether you’re scouting for a birthday basecamp or just need a break from the "Influencer Mirage" of the city, the Lake Mead circuit is the ultimate palette cleanser.

The Turo Flex: Setting the Tone

Forget the airport rental car counter. If you’re doing the Right Turn, you need a vehicle that matches the energy. This is where Turo comes in. I always tell my FORA travel clients that the journey starts with the seat leather. Why settle for a generic sedan when you can pick up a ruggedized SUV or a sleek convertible that actually lets you see the canyon walls?

For this trip, we’re looking for something that can handle the Northshore Road but still looks right parked in front of a luxury Airbnb. Think of it as your mobile command center. It’s where you’ll stash your gear, your camera, and most importantly, your stash of FB Roasters.

Lakeside Accommodations: Beyond the Hotel Room

While the hotels in Vegas are engineering marvels, there’s something unmatched about waking up and seeing the sunrise hit the red rocks from your own private balcony. We’ve been scouting some incredible Airbnbs and VRBOs in the Boulder City area and overlooking the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

When you book through a FORA travel advisor, we look for the "Quiet Luxury" spots, places with floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor fire pits for those cool desert nights, and kitchens that actually make you want to cook. Imagine grinding fresh Cowboy Blend while the mist is still rising off the water. That’s the difference between a trip and an experience.

We are currently looking at some "Galactic Era" themed properties for the upcoming LV Gala. Sonny is already working on the costume renders, so having a space that fits that aesthetic, minimalist, sleek, and slightly otherworldly, is a top priority.

The Drive: Northshore Road and the Nevada Route 169

Once you’re settled, the real magic is the drive. Nevada Route 169 is a dream. It’s the kind of road that makes you want to turn off the music and just listen to the engine. The road dips and swerves through the Mojave, revealing the reservoir in flashes of brilliant blue against the burnt orange of the desert.

One of my favorite stops is the Northshore Summit Trail. It’s a quick hike, but the payoff is a 360-degree view of the volcanic peaks and the colorful red rocks. It’s also the perfect place to crack open a thermos. If you’re following our "Books and Brews" subscription this month, this is the spot to channel your inner SecUnit. Reading Martha Wells’ All Systems Red (available at our Bookshop) while sitting on a ridge overlooking a desolate but beautiful landscape? That’s peak Murderbot energy.

Indian Casinos: A Different Kind of Luck

The "Vegas Right Turn" wouldn't be complete without a stop at one of the local Indian Casinos. This is a far cry from the claustrophobic energy of the Strip. These spots offer a more relaxed, community-focused gaming experience. It’s where you go to actually enjoy the atmosphere rather than just the hustle.

The hospitality here is top-tier, and the food, honestly, it’s some of the best-kept secrets in the valley. It’s the perfect place to grab a mid-day meal before heading back to the water. It’s about the balance: the thrill of the win followed by the peace of the lake.

The Ritual: Coffee by the Lake

At Dale's Angels Inc., we believe that coffee is the anchor of any adventure. For a Lake Mead road trip, you need something that can stand up to the desert heat and the rugged terrain. Our Cowboy Blend is the go-to here. With notes of cocoa, caramel, and vanilla, it’s rugged but refined, just like the landscape.

If you’re out on the water or just sitting on the tailgate of your Turo rental, there’s a specific kind of peace that comes with a fresh cup. It’s that moment of "Digital Realism", taking a second to disconnect from the feeds and reconnect with the actual world.

Whether you’re prepping for the LV Gala or just taking a weekend to reset, don’t skip the coffee ritual. It’s the fuel for the "August Orbit" and everything we have planned for the summer.

Why the Right Turn Matters

In a world that constantly pushes us toward the loudest, brightest, and most crowded options, choosing the "Right Turn" is an act of rebellion. It’s choosing quality over quantity. It’s choosing a curated Airbnb over a crowded hallway. It’s choosing FB Roasters over a generic chain cup.

As a FORA travel advisor, my job is to help you find those pivots. We don't just book trips; we orchestrate experiences that stay with you long after the desert sand has been washed off your boots.
